A guide to PtX modelling and allocation in long-term energy planning

Lessons learned from around the world

Summary

This publication guides readers through the process of setting up long-term energy system scenarios covering Power-to-X (PtX) production: that is, green hydrogen and derivatives generated from renewable electricity. It provides sample Terms of Reference (TORs) as a basis for the contract with potential consultants. This guideline has been developed based on experiences in developing such modelling exercises in countries such as Argentina and South Africa.

Relevant PtX products include for example green ammonia, methanol and synthetic liquid fuels. Countries and regions with favorable conditions for renewable energy generation are suited to become global players in PtX production. Thus, many countries in the Global South pursue the strategy of becoming exporters of PtX products.

The publication describes sector-coupled cost-optimisation modelling as a means of allocating PtX products among applications in the different economic sectors, including the potential for export.

To ensure transparency and long-term usability, the publication suggests open-source modelling with well-established platforms, such as OSeMOSYS or PyPSA.
